Electric Daisy Carnival Orlando Launches the “Daisy Dollar” RFID Wristband Program

There’s a lot of buzz right now over Coachella, and promoters across the nation are wondering how they too can improve the music festival fan experience. Coachella was one of the first “massives” to successfully incorporate RFID wristbands, and now production companies like Insomniac Events – the creators of Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) – are testing out the technology on their own fans.

EDC is North America’s fastest growing commercialized electronic dance music sensation. The festivals are renowned for the over-the-top audio and visual productions, performances from the biggest names in dance music, and a tech-savvy audience.

Attendees at this year’s EDC Orlando didn’t have to show up hours early to beat the long lines normally found at the festival’s entrance. After paying their admission fee online, fans were mailed a PDC Smart® RFID Wristband in place of a ticket. Upon arriving at the event, fans quickly walked through RFID-enabled entrance portals that automatically scanned their Smart Band®, instead of waiting for a staff member to manually check their paper ticket. Since the RFID wristbands contain a microchip with a unique ID number, counterfeiting was virtually eliminated.

Smart Band® helped EDC Orlando cut staffing costs by reducing the number of entrance stewards needed, save revenue by putting a halt to counterfeiting and party crashers, and improve the guest experience by reducing queue lines and getting attendees in the gates quickly and securely.

Have you seen the outfits girls wear at EDC? If you have, you’ll know there are not too many places where they can store a wallet. So Insomniac cleverly created the “Daisy Dollars” cashless spending campaign for Smart Band®. If guests wanted to purchase any items at the festival like food, drinks, locker rentals and merchandise, they were required to pre-load their RFID wristband with funds from their debit or credit card, a.k.a. “Daisy Dollars.”

Guests were able to quickly load funds on to their Smart Band® with their smart phones, and if they ran out of “Daisy Dollars” during the event, could re-visit the web site to load some more. Since their non-transferable Smart Band® stayed securely attached to the wrist, guests did not have to worry about their money being lost or stolen. If guests did not spend all their “Daisy Dollars” their unspent money was automatically transferred back onto their credit or debit card at the end of the event.
